Many of Chevron’s economic development projects focus on promoting equality and economic empowerment for women. We partner with local nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations to provide women with microloans, financial education and job training. We believe that when women are empowered, whole families see the benefits, and we think those benefits have positive effects upon future generations.
empowering women in Myanmar
Implemented through our long-term partnership with Pact in Myanmar, the Sustainable Health Improvement and Empowerment (SHINE) program empowers communities to adopt behaviors to improve their health status and increases access to livelihood opportunities. Chevron and Pact’s SHINE program has reached more than 1.25 million people across 1,476 villages in 13 townships to bring sustainable health solutions and improve livelihood opportunities. To date, SHINE has trained 10,717 community health volunteers to help ensure sustainable health improvements in communities. The Village Health Development Fund supports improved access to health care for 815,128 people and helps finance village development programs. More than 15,448 women have engaged in savings and empowerment programs that can help them earn 19 percent interest on savings.
In May 2014, Chevron/UNOCAL Myanmar signed a public-private partnership agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development and Pact Myanmar to launch the second phase of the SHINE program. The $3 million, three-year project is focused on women's economic empowerment through the establishment of Village Health and Development Funds targeted toward maternal, newborn and child health; tuberculosis; water and sanitation; and microfinance.
how we're supporting entrepreneurs around the world
Launched in 2013, I-SEED (Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship and Education) is a partnership program between the British Council and Chevron. The project aims to equip social entrepreneurship pioneers with the skills, knowledge and support network (local and international) needed to create sustainable solutions to social problems faced by their communities.
Participants are young, socially engaged Kazakhstanis, aged 18 through 29, who are inspired to create positive change in their communities. The project also helps young people gain more confidence, develop their soft skills and become more competitive in the job market.
Over the last three years, approximately 1,000 young people from Almaty, Astana, Tekeli and Yerementau have taken part in the project – and implemented more than 50 social projects aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and integrating people with disabilities into the wider community. Thirteen participants have started their own businesses, with five already active social entrepreneurs creating employment opportunities for others.
In 2017, the project extended its reach to include Atyrau, where Chevron, in cooperation with its Kazakhstani and international partners, is implementing the Youth Development Initiative.
Chevron supports entrepreneurs with a comprehensive training program to help them create and maintain their own business and improve their living conditions. In 10 years, the program has trained more than 7,000 people – 63 percent of whom have been women – and has provided loans totaling $2.6 million. These programs are carried out in four states across the country.
In Indonesia, the multiyear Chevron program PRISMA (Promoting Sustainable Integrated Farming, Small Enterprise Cluster and Microfinance Access) promotes sustainable integrated farming, small and micro enterprise development, and microfinance access for communities surrounding Chevron’s operation area in the Indonesian provinces of Riau and East Kalimantan. Supporting more than 2,500 beneficiaries, PRISMA assists 30 sectors, including agriculture, fishery, processed food commodities, and creative industries such as tenum (weaving) and batik making, as well as established eco-cultural tourism villages.
Chevron launched the first Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Incubator in Angola in 2015 as part of our ongoing efforts to help improve the capacity of Angolan entrepreneurs. We believe the ICT enables participants to compete effectively for business opportunities in the local and, eventually, international markets. The ICT Incubator supports the organizational capacity of Instituto Nacional de Apoio às Micros Pequenas e Médias Empresas in the form of equipment, technical assistance and mentoring.
